Answers to Common Questions about Podegi Baby Carriers from FreeHand Baby
Question: I live in a hot climate--so do I want a narrow pod? It seems like a blanket pod would cover me up too much. Also, I am petite--a (XBRAND) MT drove me nuts b/c I felt like we were swallowed by it.
Answer: I do not make full blanket podegis at this time. I don't find them much warmer than a MT. The great thing about not having a bottom strap is you can get a small amount of fabric around the baby if you want, or make more of a pocket for sleeping, cuddle time. My daughter learned to adjust the amount of fabric she wanted on her own after wearing her in a narrow podegi for a while. We would start off with it under her arms, and she could tuck her arms in and pull a bit of the blanket out and make a larger pocket to fall asleep in when she was ready.
Question: Can you safely do all types of carries with a narrow blanket pod (back, front and traditional/no-shoulder carry)? I have read mixed answers on this.
Answer: Yes, even with angled straps, you can do a no shoulder carry, it looks a little different but it can be done comfortably.
Question: My son is already 26 mos. Is a pod as comfortable as an MT with a large baby? It is most comfortable to wear him in an MT or a structured carrier, but he is mostly doing short carries and wanting up and down a lot now so I've actually been using my onbu much more. This is why I started wondering if the pod would provide some of the comfort of an MT but the speed of an onbu. Is the pod faster to get on/off than an MT? Same as an onbu? I like the onbu in general and my son seems comfy in it, but threading the rings annoys me and I feel like I don't have as much control over the tightness/positioning as I do with an MT. Or maybe I'm just doing it wrong.
Answer: EXACTLY!! You get the easy toss, quick tie with the pod, no rings, no extra straps. I love the tibetan carry!! There are instructions up on the site I totally prefer the pod to the onbu!
Question: And finally, I have read a lot of opinions about the types/thickness of fabrics that are good for pods b/c I guess there's a lot of variation. The general consensus seems to be that very thin material or one-layer pods aren't as comfortable with heavy babies b/c they don't provide as much support. How many layers of fabric are your pods made of?
Answer: I make them with the decorate fabric, and one layer of the twill that is the same as the straps, unless you want a reversible and then there would be 2 decorative fabrics ( usually quilters cotton) and one layer of twill in between. It keeps it light weight but sturdy.
